Forty-eight hours in Abu Dhabi, done properly, holds more than most long weekends anywhere else. I know this because I have watched guests arrive on a Friday morning, uncertain whether two days could be worthwhile, and leave on a Sunday evening genuinely not wanting to go. The city is compact enough to cover its highlights without rushing, and varied enough that no two days feel the same.
This guide gives you Day 1 in full, then four distinct options for Day 2 depending on what matters to you. One of those options is a full day in Dubai, which I recommend for guests who want the contrast and who have not been. The two cities are 90 minutes apart and could not be more different.
Day 1: The Heart of Abu Dhabi
Day 1 is the same whatever you choose for Day 2. This is the core of the city and the part I would not change for any group.
Hotel pickup by your private guide
We collect you from your hotel and drive directly to the mosque. The journey from most central Abu Dhabi hotels takes 15 to 20 minutes. Your guide sets the context for what you are about to see.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Entry pre-arranged, no queuing on arrival. Allow two full hours. The main prayer hall, the reflecting pools, the carpet that took 1,200 craftspeople two years to make. From September 2026, entry is AED 10 for international visitors. The optional Diya Light and Peace Museum at AED 25 is worth adding if your schedule allows.
Corniche waterfront walk and lunch
A 15-minute drive puts you on the Abu Dhabi waterfront. Walk south from the Hilton area toward the Emirates Palace. This stretch, with the Gulf on one side and the city skyline on the other, is the best single introduction to Abu Dhabi that exists. Lunch at one of the Corniche Road restaurants: good food, resident pricing, genuine local atmosphere.
Qasr Al Hosn fort
Abu Dhabi's oldest building, where the city began in the 1760s. Entry AED 30, under 12 free. Ninety minutes including the permanent exhibitions on pearl diving, the oil era and the formation of the UAE. This is where the story of everything you have seen today actually starts.
Emirates Palace exterior and southern Corniche
A short stop at the Emirates Palace for photographs. The facade in the late afternoon light in the cooler months is extraordinary. Walk south along the Corniche for the Etihad Towers viewpoint before returning to the vehicle.
Return to hotel, brief rest
Two hours at the hotel before the evening begins. The city tour covers a lot of ground and the break matters.
Dhow cruise dinner on the Arabian Gulf
A two-hour evening cruise along the Corniche waterfront with an international and Arabic buffet dinner on board. The Abu Dhabi skyline at night from the water is one of the most complete views of the city you will find. From AED 150 per person. Return to hotel by 10:00pm.
Day 2: Choose Your Experience
Day 2 is where the 48-hour visit becomes personal. Below are four distinct options. Each is a complete and satisfying day. The right choice depends entirely on who you are and what matters to you.
Saadiyat Island is Abu Dhabi's cultural district, ten minutes from the city. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the most important museum in the Arab world: a permanent collection built around the idea of a universal museum that tells the story of human civilisation across all cultures and centuries. Adult entry AED 63, under 18 free.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Arrive as it opens. The dome's Rain of Light effect is at its finest between 10:30am and noon. Allow three hours for the permanent collection and any temporary exhibition showing.
Lunch on the Louvre waterfront terrace
One of the finest lunch settings in Abu Dhabi. The Gulf on one side, the dome above you.
TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi
A digital art installation space opened in 2024 on Saadiyat Island. Adult tickets from AED 120. Book online in advance as it sells out on weekends. Allow 90 minutes.
Kai Beach (October to April)
Saadiyat's finest beach, ten minutes from the Louvre. Entry approximately AED 100, redeemable against food and drink. Fine white sand, calm Gulf water, views back toward the city.
Best for
Couples, solo travellers, anyone with an interest in art or architecture. Also the best Day 2 choice in summer, as the Louvre and TeamLab are both fully air-conditioned.
A morning desert safari gives you the dunes, camel riding and the clean desert air at its best. The afternoon at Yas Island gives you the world's fastest roller coaster or, for families with children, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi. It is a full and varied day that works particularly well for mixed groups.
Morning desert safari
Hotel pickup before dawn. Drive to the Al Khatim dunes south of Abu Dhabi. Sunrise dune bashing in a 4x4, sandboarding, camel riding and a Bedouin breakfast at the desert camp. Return to Abu Dhabi by 10:00am.
Return to hotel, freshen up
90 minutes at the hotel before the afternoon begins. The morning safari is an early start and guests genuinely appreciate the break.
Yas Island theme park
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi for thrill-seekers and teens. Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi for families with young children, fully air-conditioned. Yas Waterworld for a summer day or guests who want water rides. Each park fills a half-day comfortably.
Best for
Families with children over six, mixed groups, guests who want to experience both the desert and the theme parks in a single day.
I recommend this option for guests who have not visited Dubai before, or who want to understand the UAE beyond Abu Dhabi. The two cities are 90 minutes apart by road and the contrast between them is one of the most interesting things about the UAE. Dubai is taller, faster, more vertical. Abu Dhabi is wider, more deliberate, more planned. Seeing both tells you something that neither city explains alone.

Depart Abu Dhabi for Dubai
Private transfer from your hotel. Journey time approximately 90 minutes on the E11 Sheikh Zayed Road in normal weekday traffic.
Burj Khalifa area and Dubai Mall
The world's tallest building from the outside and the base is free to view. The Dubai Mall is worth 90 minutes for the scale of it, the Dubai Aquarium inside and the fountain show on the hour.
Lunch in Dubai
The Dubai Mall food court is genuinely good. Alternatively, a 20-minute drive to Dubai Creek puts you in the old city for a far more authentic lunch in the Deira or Bur Dubai areas.
Old Dubai: the Creek, Gold Souk and Spice Souk
The abra water taxis across Dubai Creek cost AED 1 per person and give you one of the best views in the city. The Gold Souk and Spice Souk are a five-minute walk from the Deira side.
Dubai Frame or Al Seef waterfront
Dubai Frame gives you the new city on one side and the old city on the other from 150 metres up. Al Seef is a heritage waterfront along the Creek, atmospheric in the late afternoon.
Return to Abu Dhabi
Private transfer back to your Abu Dhabi hotel. Arriving by 7:30pm to 8:00pm in normal traffic.
Best for
Guests who have not seen Dubai, guests who want the UAE's full contrast in 48 hours, and anyone whose return flight connects through Dubai who wants to see the city before departing.
Al Ain is the least-visited major city in the UAE and, in my view, one of the most worthwhile. It is greener than Abu Dhabi or Dubai, cooler in winter, and home to a genuinely important collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Al Ain Oasis, the Al Jahili Fort and the ancient falaj irrigation system. Jebel Hafeet, the mountain at the city's southern edge, gives you the finest view of the UAE that exists outside an aircraft.
Depart for Al Ain
Private transfer from your hotel. Journey time approximately 90 minutes through open desert before the landscape greens as you approach Al Ain.
Al Ain Oasis
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Arabian Peninsula. 1,200 hectares of date palm gardens fed by the ancient falaj irrigation channels. Walking inside the oasis, with palms closing overhead and water running at your feet, feels genuinely ancient.
Al Jahili Fort
The largest fort in Abu Dhabi emirate, built in 1891. Free to enter. The exhibition inside on Wilfred Thesiger, who crossed the Empty Quarter from here in 1948, gives remarkable historical context.
Lunch in Al Ain
Good quality restaurants priced for local residents. Al Ain has a notably different food culture to Abu Dhabi city, with excellent Omani-influenced cooking.
Jebel Hafeet
The 1,340-metre mountain at Al Ain's southern edge. The road to the summit is 12 kilometres of switchbacks rising through limestone cliffs. From the top you can see the Hajar Mountains, the Oman border and, on clear days, the outline of Abu Dhabi city far to the west.
Return to Abu Dhabi
Arriving back at your hotel by 6:30pm.
Best for
History and culture enthusiasts, guests who want the UAE beyond its cities, families who enjoy outdoor and heritage sites. Al Ain is the UAE that most visitors never find.

Practical Information for Your 48 Hours
Getting Around Abu Dhabi
A private vehicle is the right way to cover Abu Dhabi in 48 hours. The city is spread out and public transport does not serve the main visitor sites conveniently. Taxis are metered, reliable and inexpensive by international standards. Our tours include all transport between sites so you never need to arrange anything yourself.
What to Pack
- Modest clothing for the Grand Mosque: covered shoulders and legs for both men and women. Free abayas are provided at the mosque entrance for women who need them.
- Comfortable walking shoes for the Corniche, Qasr Al Hosn and the mosque grounds.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses for outdoor sections from April to October.
- A light jacket for the evening in December and January when Abu Dhabi evenings are genuinely cool.
- Loose, light clothing for the desert safari. Sand gets into everything.
The Best Time of Year for a 48-Hour Visit
October to April is the most comfortable season, with daytime temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. All outdoor activities are at their best in this period. The desert safari is at its finest in December and January: cool air, beautiful sunset light, stars visible over the dunes after dinner.
May to September visits are manageable with the right planning. The Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros World, Ferrari World and the Dhow Cruise Dinner are all excellent in summer because they are air-conditioned or happen in the cooler evening hours. The morning desert safari is the right safari choice in summer: completed before the heat peaks.
